One of the most important aspects of our game would have to be its art style. We wanted to capture that nostalgic look and feel of Saturday cartoons and comic strips. It had to look old-school with a bit of modern flair to it.
Of course our Art Director Chester is not alone in this daunting task. He’s got his very own “A-team” with him busting out those lines and colors with him. We ask our game artists Aileen and Eveth to share their thoughts with us.
Aileen Martin
How did you get started as an artist?
Aileen: I have loved drawing and doodling since the day I could hold a crayon. I used to do watercolor and oil paintings, but I eventually transitioned to digital painting. I used to just create fan art and paint for fun, since my previous line of work was in branding and graphic design. I became a game artist in 2011, and I have been making game art ever since.
Describe your art style in one word:
A: Sweet.
What are the favorite games you played growing up?
A: My favorite games growing up were RPG’s. I love Secret of Evermore, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears.
Who are your biggest influences as a digital artist?
A: Disney was a big influence for me, and I love the style of Glen Keane. I also love the cartoon retro style of Shane Glines. I draw inspiration from different people, artists and games, so I can’t point out anyone in particular.
Throughout your career, how did you go about improving your skills as an artist?
A: Like any other skill, just practice and more practice. I would also research and collect a bunch of reference art, check see which art styles I like, and use them as reference and inspiration. And since I’m in game dev, I would play a lot of games. I’d observe the current art trends, and study how the art assets are animated and integrated into the game.
What are you working on now?
A: I am currently handling the UI and the new enemies for Run Run Super V. You guys had better watch out, ‘coz these new enemies are tricky 😀

How did you get started as an artist?
Eveth: I started to get really into art when I was in high school. I had a friend who is really good at drawing. I got inspired by her. So, I decided to try drawing myself and I bought a couple of how-to-draw books and just practiced and practiced. Before I knew it… I got hooked.

What are the favorite games you played growing up?
E: I love Warcraft. It was one of the first games I ever played that had a huge impact on me. I distinctly remember tearing up while playing campaign ( ̄◇ ̄;). Also, I got addicted to Ragnarok for some time. The art is so pretty and leveling up felt so good. I really enjoy playing RPG’s
Also, Pokemon… Cause I just gotta catch ’em all 😮

E: Iain Mcaig, Wesly Burt, Kim Jung Gi, Takehiko Inoue, Tatsuyuki tanaka etc.
Throughout your career, how did you go about improving your skills as an artist?
E: It mostly involves an internal pull. It bothers me a lot when I feel that i’m no longer growing as an artist. That is why I push myself to study, draw & explore as much as I can.

E: I’m currently rendering some of Run Run Super V’s comic pages! Yay!
